Thailand’s King Vajiralongkorn (Rama X) declared Saturday, Februray 9, that Princes Ubolratana is still a member of the Royal Family and may not therefore be engaged in politics.
The declaration came after the princess, who relinquished her royal title in 1972, accepted the nomination as candidate for prime minister under the Thai Raksa Chart Party.
According to the declaration which was published in the Royal Gazzette, “Bringing a high-ranking member of the royal family to politics, in whatever manner, is an act in violation of the royal tradition and national culture and highly inappropriate.”
With the declaration, the Thai Raksa Chart Party has expressed to withdraw the nomination of the princess.
Princess Ubolratana, meanwhile, thanked the Thais in her Instagram account for their support saying she wanted to “see Thailand move forward, be admired and be accepted by international countries. I want to see all Thais have rights, opportunities, good living and happiness.”
